Are you typical?

This is a great video to show as an introduction to teaching China, Asia, or population.

Here is a link for the same video on the National Geographic website which (thankfully) is allowed through the school filter.

The video is only about 3 minutes long and it is all text and music.  I showed it after I had the kids do a world continent population simulation that had them moving around, sitting on desks, and eating chocolate.  This really was the fastest way to have 37 wild 13 year olds shut up and pay attention.  A few kids even clapped at the end of it.

  1. This was a really cool video - I might show this as a part of my summer program. I would also be interested in learning more about the lesson you used to go with it.

    1. The activity was a lot of fun- one of my colleagues created it. It does requires 6 full size candy bars per class period which could get pricey if you don't know someone with a Sams Club card :)

  2. I loved the video! There are so many interesting facts that viewers can learn within 3 minutes! I guess I could live until 86 years old:)

You seem to use lot of technology in your classroom. Have you ever used Google Earth ? It has several interactive tools that you could use in your class (if you cover geography as a part of your social study.) I use it to have my students travel to Japan virtually. http://www.google.com/earth/index.html

    1. I have not used it in my classroom yet- I haven't been creative enough to figure out a good use for it. I would love to hear about some of the ways you have incorporated it.

  3. Very cool. Even though I teach Language Arts, we can always connect with social studies. It's always a great way to activate prior knowledge to help the students connect to the reading material.
